  1. Proning:

This is one of the popular most prescribed techniques used in the acute stage of COVID-19 infection. This position helps the lungs to expand easily, which helps in oxygen level in blood flow.

  1. Mobilisation:

Short walking, on bed mobility exercise like the rising hand, moving leg apart are some of the few examples which can be followed with the guidance of a qualified physiotherapist.

  1. Lung expansion exercises:

In the stage of weaning where you are awake and stable enough maintaining your oxygen at a standard level you can follow lungs expansion exercises like Breathe in and out gently through your nose if you can. If you cannot, breathe through your mouth instead(you can breathe according to your rate), If you breathe out through your mouth, it’s best to use breathing control with ‘pursed lips breathing. Try to relieve tension in your body with each breath out and keep your shoulders relaxed. Step by step tries to make the breaths slower. Close your eyes to help you to focus on your breathing and to relax.

  1. Manual cough assist:

This exercise you can follow in the awake stage where you are slowly recovering and you can maintain your oxygen level consistently. You can follow exercises called Huff technique.

Medium volume huff technique:
Take a normal breath in and then a long breath out until you feel your lungs quite empty. Think you are trying to steam up a mirror. This helps to mobilize secretions that are lower down in your airways.

High volume huff:
Take a deep breath in then open your mouth wide and huff your breath out quickly.
Perform only 1-2 huffs together, as repeatedly huffing can make your chest stiff and congested.
Listen for crackles sound when you huff, If you hear these, you may need to cough and clear out secretions; try to spit them out in a close bowl. But try to avoid excessive coughing and make it excessively tiring & fatigue. This will helps to mobilize secretions that are in the upper section of your airways.

  1. Free movement exercise:

This is the stage when you are getting rid of the infection and you are proceeding to the rehabilitation stage.
